School of Pharmacy, Queen's University Belfast

Peer mentoring scheme

This scheme has been developed by international students who considered it important that such a scheme existed in the School. It is being offered to Level 1 international students instead of the buddy scheme because we appreciate that international students may have different needs to non-international students, particularly in the first few months of starting university. Mentoring is a way to support and encourage people to manage their own learning and development, so that they may fulfil their potential. We therefore strongly encourage all Level 1 international students in the School of Pharmacy to avail of this service. The mentors have undertaken the official training provided by the University and five of our peer mentors have won or achieved second place in the university ‘Peer Mentor of the Year’ awards (2015-2019) and received NI Healthcare Student Leadership recognition (winner in 2016, finalist in 2018, and second place in 2019). Mentors have also presented work relating to mentoring at pharmacy practice and educational conferences.

Various events will be scheduled to occur throughout the year. The mentors will primarily communicate about events and meetings directly with mentees (for example, via their Facebook page).
