School of Pharmacy, Queen's University Belfast

ATTENDANCE & ABSENCE

Students are required to attend all compulsory elements (e.g. laboratory classes/workshops) and submit all specified coursework. Reasons for absence from a compulsory element or failure to submit coursework must be directly communicated to the module coordinator and School Teaching Administrator (Mrs Lynne Spence) and must be accompanied by a valid explanation (e.g. medical certificates or other relevant documentation), normally within 3 days. The validity of any explanation will be at the discretion of the module coordinator. The absence of a valid explanation will be considered as grounds for failure of the coursework component.

Even with supporting documentation, a student who attends less than 80% of the specified compulsory elements or who submits less than 80% of the specified coursework normally will be deemed to have failed to complete the coursework component of the module and will not have the opportunity to retake coursework in the current academic year. Where there are genuine exceptional circumstances that prevent the fulfilment of the above requirements, these will be considered on a case by case basis.

Regulations Governing Absence and Failure to Submit Assignments due to Illness
University regulations:
For the purposes of these regulations, 5 working days are defined as 5 consecutive working days (i.e. excluding Saturday and Sunday).

Short-term absence (up to 5 working days)
  1. Self-certification of illness is permitted for an absence of up to 5 working days. Self-certification forms are available from your GP Surgery.

Note: self-certification is not permitted for a compulsory element.

  1. Fully completed online forms or medical certificates must be submitted within 3 days of returning to studies at go.qub.ac.uk/pharmecform.

  1. Consecutive self-certification is not permitted.

Absence of longer than 5 working days or absence from examination
(i)    Absence of longer than 5 working days or failure to meet course work assignment deadlines or absence from any examination or class test counting towards a module mark must be covered by a medical certificate signed by a registered medical practitioner.

(ii)   Online forms, available at go.qub.ac.uk/pharmecform, must be completed and uploaded with evidence within 3 days of returning to studies. Medical certificates submitted after this period are not acceptable.

General
(i)    During illness, and especially if they know that they are going to miss an assignment, deadline or examination because of illness, students should inform the School Office by completing the online form at go.qub.ac.uk/notify. If this is not possible, please ensure someone telephones or emails the School on your behalf.

(ii)   The Head of School may require any student to be examined by the University’s Medical Officer.

(iii)  Repeated self-certification may result in referral to the University’s Medical Officer.
